World of Dungeons and Summoning

Is it too late to use Vancian Magic instead?– Art by John Dickson Batten

World of Dungeons (WoDu), designed by John Harper, is a gem of a game. While I don’t feel much excitement for Dungeon World and Harper’s other RPGs, I constantly return to WoDu. I decided to create a small series of posts about the original game, reading the text and giving my interpretation and feelings about how to use them. First in this series are my thoughts about summoning.

Down the Rabbit Hole with Me

Still from Alice in Wonderland (1903)

Hello! I’m the Docto- I mean, Weird Writer (he/him). This mess is my new blog after so much time lurking in the blogosphere, grabbing snippets of knowledge and potentially bad ideas that I just loved. So it’s time to share my terrible ideas about playing pretend with adults, also known as roleplaying games.

Here’s a rundown about the content you will find here:

  • Doubtful English spelling due to not being my first language.
  • Random thoughts about “exploration-based adventure” and horror gaming, rules-light systems, amateur game design, Free Kriegspiel and solo gaming.
  • Content for gaming such as tables and ideas instead of just new rules. If you play rules-light as I do, you may be searching for content anyway.
  • If it suits me, thoughts about literature, comics, animation and film (which I’ll try my best to relate to gaming, somehow).

What subjects can you expect in this content? I have many interests that I would like to transform into gaming material. Weird and gothic. Children’s and childlike media. Fairytale and folklore fantasy. Old cartoons. Avant-garde and silent cinema. Noir. These are just examples.

Also, fair note: anti-capitalism and similar themes will pop into my posts. Not only because of my beliefs, but because I think they provide very fresh ideas for gaming and design. Still, fair note.
